On Las Tintoreras you walk over a lava field in the direction of a channel where you can see sharks resting in the shallow water. The channel is situated between a small natural lava knob and a huge lava field. The environment is indescribable: the raven lava field, the emerald green see, the forest green mangroves and the volcanoes that will be shrouded by clouds...You won’t forget this island very easily! Also you can snorkel with sharks, sea lions, penguins and can see mangroves that are underwater. Do not worry, the sharks are not aggressive. When you get back to the Lodge you have time to take a shower before dinner is served around 07:00 pm.

Ecuador is a year round destination and mainly has two main seasons the dry and wet seasons.

The Highlands (Orient areas)
The highland areas dry season is June until the end of September. In the Orient, it rains during most months, however August and December through until March are usually the driest. Both seasons have their advantages and disadvantages.

The Galapagos
In the Galápagos, the wildlife is there year-round. If travelling by sea avoid the rough-sea months from July until October. The dry season (June to December) is cool and often misty.

The Coast
On the coast, the wet season (January to May) has sunny days with daily afternoon downpours, but it is ideal beach weather. The dry season (roughly June to December) is cooler and usually overcast.

Tourist High Seasons
the Ecuador tourist high seasons coincide with European, North American and Ecuadorian vacation periods, which is from mid-December through to January and June through August. During this time, accommodation rates are at their highest and can get booked fairly quickly.

Visa

Australian passport holders do not require a tourist visa to enter Ecuador. You will however need to hold a valid Australian passport with a minimum of 6 months validity when returning back to Australia, a return ticket and staying no longer that 30 days in one year in Ecuador. If you are travelling over to Ecuador for business you need to contact the Ecuador embassy in Canberra to obtain a visa. For all other nationalities you will need to check with the Ecuador embassy.

If you are flying to the USA before or after your South American journey you will need to complete a Visa waiver form prior to departing Australia so you can enter the USA. The form will take up to 15 minutes to complete and needs to be approved by the consulate otherwise you can be denied entry into the US

Local Currency

The local currency in Ecuador is now US dollars. In 200 the ‘sucre’ was replaced by the US dollar as the legal currency, but to spite this change the ‘sucre’ will likely to still exist in rural areas for a little while longer. Bring small denominations of US currency, when you are in smaller towns it will be very hard to get change out of $50 or $100 notes. Your notes also need to be in good condition.

Safety in Ecuador

Ecuador is considered a safe country however when travelling to another country the best way to avoid any situations is common sense. If you are travelling by land expect delays as there are always road blocks. For the most up to date information on Ecuador safety visit Smart Traveller.
