Explore off the beaten track in Northern Peru with this 4 day fabulous addition to any Peru experience. This trip package includes 3 nights accommodation, daily breakfast, 2 tours with English speaking guides and entrance fees, all transfers, Cable Car to Kuelap, and waterfall views from the hotel property.
The region of Amazonas in Northern Peru is incredibly unique and home to the Chachapoya people. The region was referred to as the “Kingdom of Clouds” as the main mountaintop fortress of Kuelap literally in the clouds. The capital city is Chachapoyas and is home to over 20,000 people.
The top destinations to visit in this region are Kuelap, the sarcophagi of Karajia and the stunningly beautiful and remote Gocta Falls.
This ancient fortress built by the Chachapoya people sits atop the mountain, surrounded by high stone walls and cliffs on three sides. While not nearly as large as Machu Picchu, it is one of the most important ancient archaeological sites in Peru and still vastly unexplored. In 2017 a newly built cable car opened that crosses a deep valley which provides much easier access. Previously, the only access was via a curving, very long road that travelled around the valley and added hours both way to the journey. Easier access via the modern cable car means longer time exploring the structures and sites inside this beautiful fortress.
This important archaeological site features eight Chachapoyan mummies with sarcophagi over 2 meters tall standing high in the cliff above a river. They are referred to as “the ancient wise men”.
Carbon dating has suggested they are from the 15th century, potentially from when the Incas defeated the Chachapoyan people in 1470. These unique sarcophagi are particular to the Chachapoyan people and are painted white with body details painted on top.
Views to Gocta Falls feature prominently from many areas of Cocachimba – the picturesque town where we suggest you base yourself while in Amazonas. A visit to the base of the waterfall is a must. The stunning natural landscape is a highlight – as is the limited number of fellow tourists given the “undiscovered” nature of the beautiful part of Peru.
|Day 1||Fly Lima to Jaen, transfer to Cocachimba|
|Day 2||Guided Full Day tour Kuelap & Karajia|
|Day 3||Guided Half Day tour to Gocta Falls|

Day 1: Arrive to Amazonas Region
Arrival transfer from the airport in Jaen to accommodation in Cocachimba located in the nearby region of Amazonas. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight Cocachimba.
Day 2: Full Day Tour to Kuelap & Karajia
After breakfast there is a full day tour to explore Kuelap via the newly built Cable Car takes 3 hours of the previously extensive journey around the valley. From Cocachimba transfer to Nuevo Tingo town, a short bus ride will take you to the Cable Car station. After a short trip across the valley, your visit to Kuelap begins. There is a short 15 minute walk on foot (or on horseback if you prefer) to the fortress, which was constructed on top of the mountain at 3,000 metres above sea level.
Kuelap is surrounded by stunningly large walls and cliffs all sides but one. The interior of the fortress is filled with round buildings featuring detailed stonework. The Chachapoya people were eventually conquered by the Incas. You will return to Nuevo Tingo for lunch then continue to Karajia.
In Karajia see the sarcophagi which are constructed of stone, wood and clay. Their unique location at the top of a cliff with limited access means the sarcophagi have been well preserved. Return to Cocachimba.
Day 3: Half Day Gocta Falls & Afternoon at Leisure
Breakfast at hotel. You will be met by your guide and leave the property walking only a few minutes to the start of the trail to Gocta Waterall. This tour involves approximately an hour on horseback followed by an hour walk with some ascents and descents. The journey provides incredible views and a range of flora and fauna. Gocta Falls is over 750 meters high and is made up of two separate falls, a shorter upper falls and longer lower falls. Together they make up one of the highest waterfalls in the world.
Spend the afternoon relaxing at your hotel or walking around the picturesque town of Cocachimba.
